ALBANY — The Albany Area YMCA is conducting late registration for its annual Team Lean until Tuesday.

Team Lean 2014 is a 12-week weight-loss competition where team camaraderie and cash prizes inspire participants to lose weight and live a healthier lifestyle. The competition will kick off with the first weigh-in on Wednesday.

Teams of two to five members, made up of family members, friends, co-workers, etc., ages 12 and above, will compete to lose the highest percentage of weight during the competition. Individuals may also compete.

The top three teams and top three individuals will win cash prizes. Last year, the winning team lost 150 pounds collectively, and the Y awarded $1,600 in cash prizes.

“So far we have seven teams registered, but we have room for lots more,” competition organizer Mary Ganzel said. “Basically this is all about helping people lose weight through behavior modification and teaching them that change happens slowly. People need to understand that they can undo in three months what they’ve done over the past 20 years.”

In an effort to encourage families to get healthy together, the Y is offering a special reduced entry fee for families. If your team members are your immediate family members (spouse and children), your team can enter for a special rate.

“People will often overwhelm themselves. They want to stop smoking, stop drinking, exercise more, get more rest and begin eating right all at the same time,” Ganzel said. “It doesn’t work that way. We try to help them set achievable goals.”

Private weigh-ins take place weekly at both the Albany Facility and Lee Branch. All Team Lean participants can take advantage of four free weekly fitness classes. YMCA membership is not required, but all Team Lean participants who are not YMCA members will have the opportunity to join the Y for a 3-month membership during the competition if they choose.
