FRIDAY'S PREP HOOPS ROUNDUP: Monroe sweeps Terrell County

DAWSON — The Monroe High boys and girls basketball teams opened up the new year with a sweep of Terrell County on Friday with a pair of convincing wins.

Behind Deontae Young’s game-high 23 points, the Tornadoes cruised to a 57-36 victory to improve to 6-4 overall heading into today’s game at home against Herald No. 5 Randolph-Clay.

In the girls game, the Lady Tornadoes jumped out to a 24-4 lead after the first quarter and never looked back en route to a 67-27 victory.

After dropping four straight games and falling from No. 1 all the way out of the Fab 5 Poll, the Lady Tornadoes have now won two straight and are 10-4 overall.

Lynsey Washington led Monroe with 19 points, while Herald Super 6er Key Key Price and Cedrianna Waters added 14 and 13 points, respectively. The Lady Tornadoes will look to bounce back into the Fab 5 Poll today with a matchup against undefeated Randolph-Clay, the top team in the Fab 5 Poll.

SEMINOLE BOYS 66, BAINBRIDGE 58: The Herald No. 3 Indians outscored Bainbridge 20-12 in the final quarter to improve to 7-1.

Anfernee King led Seminole County with a game-high 28 points, and Jahmyka Pearson and Super 6er Jordan Harris scored 15 and 12 points, respectively.

Bainbridge (5-5), which led 29-24 at the half, was led by Super 6er Tyree Crump, who scored 22 points. Mike Jones added 11 points.

The Bearcats play again today at home against Miller County, and the Indians are in action Monday at home against Early County.

CRISP COUNTY GIRLS 57, CAIRO 52: The visiting Lady Cougars held off Cairo down the stretch to win Friday’s Region 1-AAAA game.

Crisp County was led by Deletria Colson (15 points), Natalie Averett (12 points) and Kayla Green (12 points). Super 6er Nasheema Oliver was held to five points in the victory.

The Lady Cougars (5-7, 4-2) play again today at home against Dooly County.

VALDOSTA GIRLS 62, MITCHELL COUNTY 52: A’Miracle Jones and Shonbreka Holton each scored 13 points to lead the Lady Eagles, who closed to within seven points in the fourth quarter but couldn’t get any closer in Friday’s loss.

Herald No. 5 Mitchell, which led 20-16 at the end of the first quarter, is now 7-4 overall and will play today at Albany High.

DWS BOYS 77, WESTFIELD 65: The Knights bounced back from two losses in the Phenix City (Ala.) Christmas Tournament with a non-region win Friday at Westfield.

Justin Eady led the way for Deerfield, scoring 20 points. Other Knights in double figures were Christian Wallace (14 points), Jay Barber (13 points) and Ryan Toole (11 points). The Knights led 36-34 at halftime and stretched their advantage to as many as nine points in the third quarter, hitting 22 of 28 free throws to ice the game.

DWS (5-3) plays again today at home against Southwest Georgia Academy.

WESTFIELD GIRLS 59, DWS 58 (OT): Westfield sank a buzzer-beater in overtime to down the Lady Knights and send them to a 3-7 overall record.

Nyla Perry led Deerfield with 24 points, while Jordan Lane and Gabby Burt scored 13 and 11 points, respectively.

EARLY COUNTY GIRLS 47, FITZGERALD 41: The Lady Bobcats picked up their first Region 1-AA victory Friday with a wire-to-wire victory at home.

Tynicia McCoy scored 18 points to lead Early County, and Latoya Eaford added 15 points. The Lady Bobcats led the whole game and were in front by as many as 15 in the fourth quarter before needing to hold off a late Fitzgerald push.

Early County (4-5, 1-1) plays again at home today against Thomasville.

CRISP COUNTY BOYS 53, CAIRO 47: The Cougars returned to .500 in the region with a win late Friday night against Cairo.

Crisp (5-6, 3-3) was led by Super 6er Javoris Cooks, who scored 22 points. Davion Harvey also added 18 points for the Cougars, who led by as many as 12 points late in the third quarter but held off a late Cairo rally.
