ALBANY — Albany Police officials say a man found asleep at the wheel of his vehicle at an Albany traffic stop has been arrested for cocaine possession.
At 5:49 a.m. Friday, officers of the Albany Police Department responded to a report of a man asleep behind the wheel of his car at the intersection of Jefferson Street and 7th Avenue, officials say. According to a “concerned motorist,” the man had sat through several changes of the traffic light, said Phyllis Banks, spokeswoman for the APD.
Officials say that when officers were finally successful in waking the driver of the 2009 Chevrolet Equinox, he was identified as 33-year-old Earl Mayberry. During an initial investigation, a clear plastic bag containing a “white rocky substance,” believed to be crack cocaine, was discovered inside the vehicle, officials say.
Mayberry was charged with possession of cocaine with intent to distribute and impeding traffic. He was taken to the Dougherty County jail, Banks said, Officials say the case has been turned over to the Albany-Dougherty Drug Unit for further investigation.
