AMERICUS — South Georgia Technical College sophomore Shameekia Murray has committed to play basketball at Division I Eastern Kentucky University for the 2014-15 season.
Murray has helped lead the Lady Jets to a No. 16 ranking in the latest NJCAA Top 25 Poll and an undefeated record in Region XVII play.
The Lady Jets (18-3, 9-0) have also put together a 13-game winning streak behind Murray, who leads SGTC in scoring with 16.4 points per game.
Murray, a 5-foot-10 guard from Claxton, has played in all 21 of the Lady Jets’ games this season and has started 19. She is a 56.1 percent free throw shooter and hits 52.1 percent of her shots from the field. She is also connecting on 40 percent of her 3-point shots.
In addition to her shooting, Murray is averaging seven rebounds and 3.1 assists per game.
She was the first player in the history of the South Georgia Technical College basketball program — and the second in Region XVII history — to be named as an NJCAA Player of the Week after posting 34 points in a road win at Georgia Highlands earlier this season.
“(Murray) is an outstanding person and a very good basketball player,” South Georgia Tech coach James Frey said. “She transferred to South Georgia Tech from Chattahoochee Technical College and has done an outstanding job this year with the Lady Jets. I wish her the best in her future endeavors.”
Eastern Kentucky plays in the Ohio Valley Conference. The Lady Colonels were 18-12 last season and 11-5 in the Ohio Valley Conference. They finished tied for second in the conference last season.
