SATURDAY'S PREP HOOPS ROUNDUP: Monroe girls clinch regular season region title

CORDELE — In a battle between the top two girls teams in Region 1-AAAA, the Herald No. 2 Monroe Lady Tornadoes used a go-ahead field goal from Cekeya Mack with three seconds left to steal a 56-54 come-from-behind victory Saturday against Crisp County and clinch the regular season region title.

With the score tied at 54-54 with 30 seconds to go, Monroe held for the final shot after erasing a five-point deficit in the final three minutes. With eight seconds left, Monroe Super 6er Key Key Price drove to the basket but had the ball knocked from her hands and straight to Mack, who hit a short field goal to win the game.

The Lady Tornadoes (17-4, 12-0) have won nine in a row, while Crisp County (11-9, 8-3) still controls its own destiny for the No. 2 seed in the region tournament and an automatic berth in the state tournament.

Price, who scored 36 points in Monroe’s win against Dougherty on Friday, led the way Saturday with 24 points, while Mack scored 10 points.

Kayla Green led Crisp County with 17 points, followed by Deletria Colson (16) and Super 6er Nasheema Oliver (14).

CRISP COUNTY BOYS 47, MONROE 43: The Herald No. 3 Cougars held on to the No. 2 spot in the Region 1-AAAA standings and set up a key matchup with No. 2 Westover on Tuesday.

On Saturday, Davion Harvey and Super 6er Javoris Cooks scored 14 and 11 points, respectively, to lead Crisp County (11-8, 8-3), which led 24-14 at halftime but had to hold off a Monroe comeback in the second half.

The Tornadoes (10-7, 6-6) were led by Emersen Afford’s 12 points.

PELHAM BOYS 77, MITCHELL COUNTY BOYS 33: The Hornets have now won 11 straight games and continue to look like one of the strongest teams in Southwest Georgia and in all of Class AA.

Pelham led Mitchell by just 23 points after the third quarter but outscored the Eagles 24-3 in the final period to run away with the victory in front of a near sell-out crowd.

Shaquille Crimley led all scorers with 16 points, while Jaquan Green and Darius Spence each added 12 points for the Hornets. Mitchell didn’t have a player score more than six points.

PELHAM GIRLS 65, MITCHELL COUNTY GIRLS 28: The Herald No. 5 Lady Eagles lost for the second time this year to Herald No. 1 Pelham, which continued its perfect season and improved to 18-0.

Quaelranique Franklin scored a game-high 26 points to lead Pelham, and Destiny Thomas added 11 points. Herald Super 6er Briunna Freeman was held to four points in the blowout win.

Mitchell County’s leading scorer was A’Miracle Jones, who finished with nine points.

RANDOLPH-CLAY SWEEPS MILLER COUNTY: The Randolph-Clay boys and girls picked up a pair of Region 1-A wins on Saturday at Miller County.

In the boys game, The Herald No. 5 Red Devils cruised to a 56-32 victory, which followed the No. 4 Lady Red Devils’ 62-43 win.

Super 6er Gary McCrae scored 13 points and Ryan Wiggins added 10 points to lead the Red Devils, while Antrayves Benton finished with a team-high 11 points for Miller County.

Leading scorers in the girls game were Brandi Buie (20) and Shanice Jackson (16) for Randolph-Clay and Mallory Diamond (23) for Miller County.

LEE COUNTY GIRLS 68, HARRIS COUNTY 55: Katherine McConnell scored 19 points to lead the Lady Trojans to a Region 1-AAAAA victory.

Also in double figures for Lee County were Desja Johnson (15 points, 7 rebounds) and Maggie O’Connor (12 points, 12 rebounds, 7 rebounds).

The Lady Trojans are now 13-6 overall and 4-2 in Region 1-AAAAA heading into Tuesday game against Bainbridge, which is Lee County’s final home game of the season and Senior Night.

BAINBRIDGE BOYS 61, CAIRO 46: Herald Super 6er Tyree Crump scored 16 points Saturday to help the Bearcats win their third straight game.

Bainbridge (13-7) resumes Region 1-AAAAA play Tuesday with a game at rival Lee County.

Also scoring in double figures for the Bearcats was Devonte Jones, who finished with 11 points.

DEERFIELD-WINDSOR BOYS 80, FAITH BAPTIST 69: Bouncing back from last weekend’s loss to Restoration Academy (Ala.), the Knights improved to 12-4 overall with Saturday’s non-region win.

Jay Barber led Deerfield’s scoring with 17 points; Justin Eady added 15 points; and Ryan Toole and Chandler Matthews each scored 10 points.

The Knights return to GISA Region 3-AAA play Tuesday with a home game against Brookwood.

CRISP ACADEMY GIRLS 56, WESTFIELD 50: Super 6er Madi Mitchell scored 30 points to help the Lady Wildcats hold off a tough Westfield team that cut Crisp’s lead to as low as two points in the fourth quarter.

Maddie Krause added 14 points for the Lady Wildcats, who are now 19-2 overall.

SOUTHLAND GIRLS 48, SHERWOOD 43: Key’yada Thomas scored 23 points and grabbed six rebounds for the Lady Eagles, but it wasn’t enough against Southland in Saturday’s non-region game.

Madison Walker added 11 points and five rebounds for Sherwood (12-6), which plays again Monday at Calvary Christian.

LEE COUNTY BOYS 68, HARRIS COUNTY 49: The Trojans won each quarter Saturday to pick up a Region 1-AAAAA victory and move into a tie with Bainbridge for second in the region standings, making Tuesday’s matchup against the Bearcats a pivotal game.

Jalin Wimberly (14 points) and JJ Rivers (12 points, 11 rebounds) led the way for Lee County, which is 10-9 overall and 4-2 in the region.
