Teen drowns in Albany pool Saturday

Efforts to save teen unsuccessful

ALBANY — Officials say a 13-year-old boy drowned as the result of an incident at an Albany pool on Saturday evening.

Shift reports available from the Albany Fire Department show that units responded to 1421 Owens Ave. at around 6:15 p.m. for a water rescue. The boy was with his uncle visiting from Atlanta and swimming at a pool in the neighborhood, the shift report said.

The shift report from the AFD also said someone from across the street was on the phone when he saw the drowning incident unfolding. He went to assist in getting the teen out of the pool. He was in 10 feet of water, so the man’s nephew went to the bottom of the pool. Efforts to save him were ultimately unsuccessful.

The victim was identified by Dougherty County Coroner Michael Fowler as Zyhir Johnson, 13. Reports show that Dougherty EMS and the Albany Police Department also responded to the scene.
