A well-respected and beloved doctor, Carl was born in Agricola, Mississippi in 1931. In 1958, he graduated from Tulane School of Medicine in New Orleans, Louisiana third in his graduation class, he interned at University Hospital, Jackson, Mississippi. The following year he established his practice in Plains, GA before moving to Cuthbert for a surgical fellowship with Dr. Robert Martin. There, Carl raised his family and practiced medicine from 1962 until his retirement in 2013. He served in the Korean War as a marine where he was awarded the Purple Heart.

Dr. Sills has been a member of the Cuthbert First Baptist Church where he taught the men’s adult Sunday School Class. He was fondly called Doc by his friends, Deddy and Daddy by his children and Daddy Carl by his grandchildren. He was married to Elizabeth Hadden in 1957. But, mostly he was a man who fiercely loved his children and his grandchildren and where they gathered, so did he. In a crowd, Dr. Sills enjoyed talking one on one with friends. In private, he enjoyed playing cards and games with his family or sitting around the kitchen table in deep discussions with matters relating to books, careers, and life. Of the many qualities that made him a great doctor, his innate ability to listen was what made him an outstanding doctor. He was a member of the American Medical Association (AMA), Board member of Patterson Hospital, Board member of Randolph Southern School, President of the Randolph County Development Corporation, a Certified FAA Medical Examiner, former Rotarian and Lions Club member.

His parents, Carl E. Sills and Louella Sills and his brothers, Walter B. Sills and Lennis D. Sills preceded him in death.
