'Vagina Monologues' set at Albany State University

Program raises money to prevent violence against women and girls

ALBANY — A two-night reading of the award-winning play “The Vagina Monologues” will be presented at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday at Albany State University’s ACAD Auditorium.

The program is part of an effort by ASU and Darton State College to join the global movement V-Day 2014 College/University Campaign. An activist movement to end violence against women and girls, V-Day is a catalyst that promotes creative events to increase awareness, raise money and revitalize the spirit of existing anti-violence organizations.

V-Day generates broader attention for the fight to stop violence against women and girls including rape, battery incest, female genital mutilation and sex slavery.

The local event will benefit Liberty House of Albany. General admission tickets are $10 in advance or at the door. Student tickets are $3 in advance and $5 at the door. Tickets may be obtained by calling Darton at (229) 317-6875, ASU at (229) 430-4839 or Liberty House at (229) 439-7094.

Directed by Ray Procter of ASU Theater Department, cast members include Tara Herrschaft, Connie Williams, Elizabeth Henderson, Troy Washington, Elizabeth Delancy, Devonna Mallory, Charo Glover, Antionette Skipper, Deborah Liss-Green, Ja’Kelli Elston, Donna Dungee, JimmyQuia Faison, Morgan Gadley, Denise Johnson and Shakhana Fulton.

The event is sponsored by the ASU and Darton theater programs. The program will begin with a performance by the Darton State College Dancers. Choreographed by Brian Mathis, the dancers include Ariel Daniel, Kirsten Ferguson, Tunisha Hayes and Briana Mathis. They will dance to “Four Women”, Wild is the Wind by Nina Simone.

A reception for discussion and networking will follow the Saturday evening performance.
