ALBANY — Firefighters are getting ready to slather on the sauce for their fourth annual Rhythm, Rides and Ribs Barbecue Cookoff at Sams Club on North Westover Boulevard this Saturday.
There will be plenty of ribs for public, firefighters say, not to mention fancy cars, music, bouncy houses and face-painting.
The free event is a part of the AFD’s “Give Burns the Boot” campaign to raise money and awareness for the Georgia Burn Foundation, an organization to assist children and their families after suffering burn injures, said Albany Fire Inspector Laurence Cargile.
The GBF also sponsors burn-injured children for camp Oo-u-la in Winder, Cargile said, which provides counseling and help with physical and emotional recovery while forging relationships with those of similar injuries.
The theme for 2014 is Showcars of Albany because of a special appearance by members of the Artisan Car Club and their classic rides. Also, firefighters say anyone may bring their own special ride to show.
There may even be some motorcycles here and there, Cargile said. Tifton Harley Davidson representatives are expected to be there to test and tune some bikes.
Featured also is the popular AFD safe house, a child-size home designed to illustrate fire safety, a mini-fire truck converted from a golf cart, and childrens’ ID kits provided by the Dougherty County Sheriff’s Office.
Jenny Jackson with the AFD said a number of prizes will be raffled as part of the fund raising effort, including a special Mother’s Day gift basket.
If all that’s not enough, come for the on site music deejay, the Safety Pup, and the always popular “dunk tank,” Jackson said. According to Jackson the tank offers an opportunity for those with throwing skills to make a volunteer very wet.
“Members of the firefighters’ new dive team are volunteering for the tank this year,” Gargile said.
Rhythm, Rides and Ribs starts at 9 a.m. and continues through 4 p.m. Officials say their is no admission charge, although there may be a charge for food and other attractions.
