MILLEDGEVILLE — The Deerfield-Windsor baseball team took to the road a little earlier than usual this postseason, but it didn’t seem to bother the Knights, who swept host John Milledge Academy to advance to the GISA Class AAA state quarterfinals.

Catching fire at just the right time, the No. 3 seed Knights will play either Tattnall Square or Heritage next weekend with a trip to the Final 4 on the line.

“This is great momentum for us to go on the road and beat a quality John Milledge team that is playing good baseball right now,” Deerfield coach Rod Murray said. “We hit well up and down the lineup and got great outings from all of our pitchers.”

Justin Glover did the most damage for the Knights, hitting homers in both games and pitching a gem in the opener, which Deerfield won 6-2. Will Akins took the mound in Game 2 for Deerfield and was equally impressive, pitching the Knights to a series-clinching 7-3 victory.

In the opener, Glover smacked a two-run homer in the third inning to tie game and finished 2-for-5 at the plate with three RBIs. On the mound, he threw five inning with 12 strikeouts, four hits and three walks.

Glover picked right back up in the second game with four RBIs and four hits, including a home run in the fifth inning to help Deerfield overcome an early deficit.

Akins threw six innings, struck out eight and allowed six hits. Steven Williams got saves in both games.

TERRELL ACADEMY SWEEPS: Terrell Academy dominated Griffin Christian with a pair of double-digit victories to sweep its way into the Class AA quarterfinals.

Terrell Academy’s Jordan McDaniel threw a no-hitter in the opener to lead the Eagles to a 15-0 victory, and then Charlie Maxwell twirled a two-hitter in the night cap, which Terrell Academy won 14-3.

Jared Sauls led the way for the Eagles offensively with three hits and five RBIs, while Hunter Mathis (3-6, 3 RBIs, 2 2B) and Gavin Sloan (4-5, 5 R, 3 RBIs) also had big days at the plate.

Terrell Academy will play either Gatewood or Edmund Burke in next weekend’s second round.

WESTWOOD 11, LaGRANGE 1: The Wildcats kicked off their postseason run with a victory in Game 1 of Friday’s Class AA opening-round series and will go for the sweep at 10 a.m. today.

Westwood pulled ahead early with six first-inning runs and cruised to the six-inning victory.

Starter Collier Baggett went the distance for Westwood and allowed just one hit with seven strikeouts.

Chason Worsham (3-4, 2 2B, 3B), Dillon Smith (2-4) and Baggett (2-3, 2B) were the top hitters for the Wildcats, who are the No. 1 seed from Region 3-AA.

SOUTHLAND 2, BULLOCH 1: John Adkins scored on a walk-off wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh inning, giving the Raiders a victory in Friday’s opening game of the Class AAA opening-round series. Game 2 between No. 2 seed Southland and No. 3 Bulloch Academy will be played at noon today.

Atkins reached on a lead-off single, was sacrificed over to second base and then took third base and home on back-to-back wild pitches to break the 1-1 tie.

Southland’s Geoffrey McDonald threw a complete game and struck out 12 with four hits and two walks. Reed Dillard was the lone Raider with multiple hits, finishing 2-for-2 with a double.
