ALBANY — Faculty members and students in the Albany State University College of Education have named Debra Wiley as this year’s COE Teacher of the Year. Wiley was chosen as the Department of Teacher Education Teacher of the Year.
Janis Carthon was selected as the Department of Counseling Education Teacher of the Year.
“I was shocked and overwhelmed to be selected by my peers as the Teacher of the Year for the unit and department,” said Wiley, who has served as an Assistant Professor at ASU since spring 2010.
She currently teaches “Exploring Socio-Cultural Perspectives in Education and Investigating Critical and Contemporary Issues in Education,” among other courses.
“I really appreciate the support and kindness that my colleagues demonstrated by allowing me this awesome opportunity to be recognized among a group of outstanding scholars,” she said.
With 22 years of collegiate level teaching for two-year and four-year institutions, Wiley has a host of experience in the education field. She was officially selected as Teacher of the Year in April.
“Since joining the Teacher Education faculty, Dr. Wiley has worked diligently to structure and enhance the Education Foundations coursework for both undergraduate and graduate candidates,” said Kimberly Suress Gaiters-Fields, interim dean of the ASU College of Education. “She greatly contributes to the rigor and quality of our programs, while demonstrating passion and dedication to the teaching profession and local educational community.”
