Three state tournament series. Three Game 3 victories.
That’s been the recipe for the Crisp County baseball team, which won its third straight deciding Game 3 in the Class AAAA state tournament on Wednesday with a 13-3 victory against Walnut Grove.
With the win, Crisp County advances to the Final 4 for the second year in a row. The Cougars will host the best-of-three semifinal matchup against Alexander. Games 1 and 2 will be played Monday with a possible Game 3 on Tuesday.
“I don’t know why we have to put our backs against the wall, but each series we have and they have come out fighting,” Crisp County coach Bill Pate said.
The Cougars rallied for five runs in the first inning and then added another seven runs in the third inning, which was highlighted by a three-run double from Taylor Walls, who also scored on the play after a Walnut Grove error.
Starter Witt Campbell gave up an opening-inning run but then settled in before being relieved in the fifth inning.
