LAS VEGAS — It was Leesburg, Ga., night for a minute or so in Las Vegas on Sunday night.

Country music superstar Luke Bryan, a Leesburg native, was presented with the award for top country music artist at the Billboard Music Awards by another music celebrity from “back home” — American Idol winner Phillip Phillips, whose sophomore album, “Behind the Light,” is out today.

“Leesburg in the house!” Bryan exclaimed when he received the award for which Florida Georgia Line, with whom Bryan performed during the awards show; Darius Rucker, Blake Shelton and Taylor Swift also were nominated.

Bryan joined Florida Georgia Line’s Brian Kelley and Tyler Hubbard in a performance of “This is How We Roll” and he also performed “Play It Again” during the show.

“Literally,” Bryan told the crowd at the MGM Grand Hotel, “Phillip and I are from the same little hometown, which is pretty awesome.”

Bryan thanked his wife and others in his brief acceptance remarks, including his booking agent Jay Williams, who he said he was always forgetting to thank. He also thanked the other nominees in his category for “pushing the envelope” of country music.

“We are honored to be in the room tonight with so much talent,” he said, adding there were “so many wonderful fans out there that keep us singing, keep us out on the road.”

The awards who was televised by ABC.
