Loop the Lake is set for Saturday in Cordele

The event at Lake Blackshear will benefit GraceWay Recovery Residence

CORDELE — The 2014 Lake Blackshear Loop the Lake 5K Run, one-mile fun run/walk and Stroller Roll benefiting GraceWay Recovery Residence in Albany will be held on Saturday at the Lake Blackshear Resort and Golf Club in Cordele.

The annual event since 2006 is being presented by Dr. Edward Hellman, orthopedic spine surgeon with the Spine and Scoliosis Center at Georgia Sports Medicine in Tifton. It includes a scenic loop around Lake Blackshear, beginning at the entrance of the resort.

“Eight years ago, Dr. Hellman presented this idea because he had friends who ran (and knew of) the beauty at Lake Blackshear,” said Liz Dixon, the executive director at GraceWay. “Dr. Hellman is a very generous man, and he and his wife help put this on.”

GraceWay Recovery Residence is a non-profit, faith-based, long-term substance abuse treatment center for women seeking recovery in a home environment. All of the proceeds will go to helping keep the center open, Dixon said.

The goal for the race is to raise $60,000, with hopes of about 500 attendees coming in from throughout Georgia as well as Florida and Alabama. Among those participants are expected to be some of GraceWay’s residents.

“(People will be able to see) what the face of recovery really looks like,” Dixon said.

The 5K run starts at 8 a.m. and the 5K Stroller Roll will start at 8:10 a.m. The one-mile fun run/walk and Stroller Roll will start at 8:20 a.m. The event will include Event Tech chip timing, a disc jockey, full pancake breakfast at Cypress Grille, an official event T-shirt, loaded goody bags and a chance to win some door prizes. Trophies will also be awarded to male and female overall winners, masters winners, grand masters winners, and medals to the top three men and women in each age division.

Online registration, which will close at noon Thursday, costs $25 for the one-mile and stroller event for adults; $30 for children and adults in the 5K race and the 5K stroller roll, and $15 for children in the the 5K or one-mile stroller roll.
