Albany police to hold black tie fundraising gala

ALBANY — The Family Protection unit of the Albany Police Department will present its Black Tie Gala fundraising event Saturday at the Hilton Garden Inn, 101 South Front St. in Albany, police officials say.
Sgt. Kawaski Barnes, APD detective, said the formal affair is meant to raise money for the department’s Project Lifesaver, an electronic tracking system for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease, down syndrome or other conditions which may cause patients to wander unexpectedly from their caregivers. According to Barnes, a part of the funds generated by the gala will be used to purchase additional transmitting bracelets for the program.
According to officials, ticket sales will also help fund community events, including the APD’s Community Thanksgiving dinner on Nov. 25.
“Last year we served more than 900 community members with no cost at all to the taxpayers,” Barnes said. “We’d like to continue with those types of programs.”
The gala event will include dinner, a cash bar, entertainment by the jazz ensemble Harry King & Friends and a silent auction of merchandise donated by local business, Barnes said.
“This is a great event for networking or just to mix and mingle,” Barnes said.
According to Barnes, some of the merchandise available for bid includes a weekend stay at the Hilton Garden Inn, a Michael Kors mens watch valued at $250 and gift certificates from John Ross Jewelers and Ashley’s Furniture.
Tickets for the Black Tie Gala are $40 per person or $300 for a table seating eight, Barnes said, and are available at the door. The event will begin at 7 p.m. and continue until 11 p.m. For addition information contact Sgt. Kawaski Barnes at (229) 431-2113 or [email protected]
