ALBANY — Albany-based Heritage Financial Corp., and three other Southwest Georgia businesses have been recognized by Georgia Trend magazine on its annual list of the Top 100 Public Companies in the state.
Three of the four regional companies on this year’s list are financial institutions, including Albany’s Heritage Financial Corp., Moultrie’s Southwest Georgia Financial Corp., and Colony Bankcorp Inc. in Fitzgerald. Perennial Top 100 company Flowers Foods Inc. in Thomasville rounded out the Southwest Georgia group.
Each year Georgia Trend ranks the Top 100 Public Companies headquartered in Georgia based on data obtained by national financial research S&P Capital IQ and is primarily focused on the prior year’s revenue and number of employees.
Flowers Foods was the highest ranked area company at No. 21, with revenue of $3,751 million and 10,500 employees in 2013.
Ameris Bankcorp, headquartered in Moultrie, was No. 73 on the list with $173 million in revenue and 984 employees in 2013.
Heritage Financial was next on the list at No. 82, with $84 million in revenue and 426 employees in 2013.
Colony Bankcorp landed at No. 89 on the list with $54 million in revenue and 328 employees in 2013.
Southwest Georgia Financial came it at number No. 98 with $20 million in revenue and 117 employees in 2013.
The majority of the companies on the list are headquartered in metro Atlanta with The Home Depot Inc. topping the state list with $78,812 million in revenue and 365,000 employees for 2013. United Parcel Service Inc. (UPS) was second on the list with $55,438 million in revenue and 395,000 employees in 2013. Coca-Cola rounded out the top 3 with $46,854 million in revenue and 130,600 employees.
Columbus boasted four companies on the list including Aflac Inc. at No. 5 with $23,939 million and 9,141 employees; Total Systems Services Inc. at No. 29 with $2,132 million in revenue and 9,600 employees; Synovus Financial Corp. at No. 40 with $1,183 million in revenue and 4,696 employees; and Carmike Cinemas Inc. at No. 53 with $635 million in revenue and 7,800 employees.
Overall, Georgia Trend reported that this year’s leading businesses saw an increase of more than $25 billion in revenue and an increase of 75,011 total employees compared to last year.
The magazine also reported that this year’s list showed an increase in biotechnology and healthcare companies. It also reported that with the addition of HD Holding Supplies to this year’s list, Georgia is now home to 17 Fortune 500 companies.
