ALBANY — Authorities say no charges are being filed in the case of an Albany man who engaged in a brief, armed standoff with officers from the Albany Police Department (APD) and the Dougherty County Police (DCP) late Tuesday afternoon.
Carlton Knox was taken by ambulance to Phoebe Putney for a psychiatric evaluation after he placed a gun to his head and threatened to kill himself after officers pulled him over in the restaurant parking lot in response to an ongoing missing person investigation.
Reports from the Albany Police Department indicate that officers had responded to a domestic incident earlier in the day on Tuesday and were told by Knox’s son, Malcolm, that Carlton Knox had left the family’s residence at 714 Shamrock St. very upset following a verbal dispute with his wife, Audra Knox
At that time Malcolm Knox reported that Carlton Knox had left a note beside an empty handgun holster which stated, “I love you, I hope you are happy,” reports said.
After a lookout was issued for Carlton Knox, an APD officer spotted the blue Ford truck Knox was reported to be driving sitting in a parking space at Darton State College. When officers pulled into that parking lot the truck backed out of the parking space and exited the campus, turning east on to Gillionville Road.
After confirming the tag on the truck matched that of Knox’s, the officer turned on his blue lights and siren prompting the truck to pull into the parking lot of the McDonald’s at the intersection of Westover Boulevard and Gillionville Road.
While officers were attempted to communicate with Knox through vehicle window he was began asking to talk to his pastor and his wife. Knox was also reportedly holding a handgun to his head and also threw his cell phone out of the window.
