Be smart when asking for help
Health & Fitness column
Since I became an avid cyclist and road racer in 2008, I’ve been very fortunate to have a wealth of cycling knowledge and experience at my fingertips.
Start caring now to get more miles in life
Health & Fitness column
Most of us know a friend or family member (it may even be you!) who will drive a car until the wheels fall off. I had a friend that drove an old Honda that was almost 20 years old with 200,000 plus miles on it.
Baby steps, dedication make for a good routine
Health & Fitness column
It’s been several months since I’ve written an article for this column. I have to be inspired before I write, and I had fallen into a rut. I’m excited to be back in the rotation for a few months, and I hope you enjoy reading my stories again.
Think activity when shopping for gifts
Health & Fitness column
It’s the most wonderful time of the year. I love Christmas. My tree has been decorated; presents are wrapped; Christmas music plays throughout the house. I am in the Christmas spirit this year. Some years I wait until the last minute to buy gifts, but this year I’m ahead of the game.
Create a program that matches your body type
It’s been two months since you’ve heard from me. I was really busy in October, and I missed my deadline. I apologize for my oversight, and I’m glad to share my thoughts with you again.
Racing for fun is a new concept for me
My cycling season is coming to an end. Our last race is September 29, and I have to admit that I am ready for it to be over.
Make full use of abilities you have
I enjoy watching the Olympics. Thinking of all of the hours of training and hard work that the athletes have put in over the last four years inspires me to do better things.
Get comfortable by getting uncomfortable
We went out to dinner with some friends last weekend. The conversation quickly turned to cycling, as it often does when we hang out with our racing buddies.
Words can motivate you into motion
Nike does a great job of incorporating motivating fitness quotes into their advertising campaigns. You may not even wear a lot of Nike apparel, but you are certainly familiar with their “Just Do It” slogan. We’ve all used little motivational sayings at one time or another in our daily lives.
Lunges give you a leg up on getting fit
Every week I train each body part. My favorite training day? Legs! My favorite exercise for training legs? Walking lunges! I love them. Just ask anyone who has ever taken one of my Butts n Guts classes.
A healthy lifestyle starts at home
I was cleaning out my t-shirt drawer last week. You know the one I’m talking about ... it’s full of t-shirts reminding you of everything from your last 5k run to that all-night frat party during your last year of college.
Don’t ignore weak part of your ‘game’
I see it all the time ... the guy in the gym with the bulging biceps and the cleavage that would make Dolly Parton jealous, but he can’t run five minutes on the treadmill.
Cycling good way to tone up, slim down
I turned 40 on Sept. 14. I had been dreading that week for the obvious reasons.
