AMERICUS — Mark Wilson doesn’t know where it came from, he only knows it is not true.
A report surfaced early Monday afternoon in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that Wilson had resigned as football coach at Americus-Sumter High School. The information used in the AJC reported originated from the Georgia High School Football Daily newsletter.
But when reached by The Herald Wilson confirmed that he had talked to Sumter County Superintendent Dennis McMahon and was, in fact, still the program’s coach.
“Yeah, I don’t know where those things come from,” Wilson said. “I haven’t resigned. I talked with the superintendent, he said they are evaluating the program, but hadn’t really made that decision.”
Wilson just finished his fourth season leading the Panthers and has gone 15-27 during his tenure. The Panthers were 4-6 last year, but Wilson believes they made enough strides that he deserves to return for another season.
“I think we have (made enough progress),” he said. “We played a lot of juniors and sophomores last year and we didn’t really play enough seniors. We could have done better, there is no question about that.”
Americus-Sumter will move down from GHSA Class AAAA next year to Class AAA and Wilson believes the move with a number of returning players will make a significant difference.
“You never know from year to year, but numbers-wise it matches up better for the kids. Been pretty successful against AAA the last four years. There are a lot of good teams and coaches in AAA, too.”
