ALBANY — The Monroe boys and girls track & field teams put together a complete performance to earn back-to-back region titles.

The boys earned 149.5 points to earn top honors, while the girls scored 180 points Thursday night in the Region 1-AAAA meet at Hugh Mills Stadium.

Monroe coach Billy Glanton was happy with both his team’s performances but wants to make sure they don’t peak too early. The sectional meet is April 30th in Carrollton.

“Hopefully, we can start to peak a little bit at sectionals,” Glanton said. “We want to really, really peak at the state meet.”

The Westover boys and girls both finished second, earning 96.5 and 142 points respectively.

Westover coach Octavia Jones was happy with how the boys have progressed since early in the season.

“I think the boys came out and performed exceptionally well,” Jones said. “At the beginning of the season, we had a lot of people that were hurt. Once they got back to us and got healthy, we started coming together as a team. I’m proud we were able to pull out the second-place finish.”

The Lady Patriots were in first after eight events, but the Monroe girls put together a complete performance in the track events to jump out in front.

The Westover girls won the triple jump, pole vault and high jump to help build the lead.

“They performed exceptionally well in the field events,” Jones said. “That gave us a chance on the track. We didn’t finish it, but I’m proud of the way they performed.”

Monroe had the top two teams in the girls 4×400-meter relay and took first in the 4×100-meter relay.

The Monroe boys had the top two finishers in the 4×100-meter relay and the 4×400-meter relay.

Monroe’s Tymashye Kendrick won the 200-meter dash and edged out teammate Tedo McGowan for a victory in the 400-meter dash.

“I was thinking about Tedo in the stretch,” Kendrick said. “When he came up behind me, he made me push harder.”

While Glanton was happy with both his teams, he knows everything has to be perfect by the time state comes around.

“I was really impressed that both teams kept it together throughout the whole meet,” Glanton said. “Everybody did what we expected them to do. We had a little hiccup on Tuesday with the boys, but hopefully we will be able to overcome it.”
