Rain forecast for Kentucky Derby

The 143rd running of the Kentucky Derby may include wet track conditions on Saturday at Churchill Downs.

The National Weather Service forecasts a 60 percent chance of rain in Louisville, Ky., today, mainly between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., with the Run for the Roses scheduled for a 6:46 p.m. post time. Temperatures will be in the low to mid-50s

A sloppy track can make it difficult to predict how the 3-year-old colts will handle the 1 1/4-mile distance. The Derby has been run over a sloppy or muddy track 14 times, most recently in 2013.

Classic Empire, the 4-1 early favorite from the No. 14 post, and Lookin at Lee have experience racing on a wet track at Churchill Downs.

Classic Empire won his maiden race by 1 1/2 lengths on the sloppy track at Churchill last May, while Lookin at Lee finished second in the Grade III Iroquois last September.

Georgia rallies to beat Kentucky

LEXINGTON, Ky. — The University of Georgia scored four runs in the ninth to rally past fourth-ranked Kentucky 5-3 to claim the opening game of an SEC series Friday at rainy Cliff Hagan Stadium.

The Bulldogs (18-28, 6-16 SEC) took advantage of a pair of Kentucky miscues to stun the Wildcats, who had been 28-0 when leading after eight innings. It was Georgia’s first late comeback of the year, as it was 0-24 when trailing after eight frames. With the loss, Kentucky dropped to 31-15 overall and 14-8 in the SEC.

Down 2-1 in the ninth and facing Kentucky closer Logan Salow with a 0.46 ERA, sophomore LJ Talley reached with a leadoff single. After retiring the next two Bulldogs, freshman Tucker Maxwell smashed a double off the centerfield wall as Talley raced to third. Freshman Austin Biggar followed with a grounder that took a strange hop to shortstop Connor Heady who couldn’t stop it from going in to left field as Talley and Maxwell scored for a 3-2 lead. Freshman Tucker Bradley kept the inning going with a base hit. Freshman Cam Shepherd lifted a fly ball to right field that Tristan Pompey had pop out of his glove, allowing Biggar and Bradley to score for a 5-2 advantage. Coming in Friday, Salow had allowed just seven runs all year (two earned) in 39.1 innings. In the bottom of the ninth, Georgia turned to sophomore Kevin Smith.

The Wildcats pushed a run across on a bases-loaded walk and left the bases loaded as Smith notched his second career save, allowing a run on two hits with two walks and two strikeouts in an eventful final inning.

Jay Cutler joins Fox Sports

Former Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler agreed to a contract with Fox Sports on Friday after a tepid free-agent market helped guide the 34-year-old into broadcasting.

Cutler’s contract places him on the No. 2 NFL broadcast team at Fox

Cutler spent the past eight seasons with the Bears. But he was let go by the John Fox-led regime in March and no serious suitors emerged. Cutler has not officially retired from the NFL, however.

Cutler auditioned with Fox on Thursday. The network was seeking a replacement for John Lynch after the latter became the San Francisco 49ers’ general manager earlier this offseason.

Cutler will be part of a three-man booth with Kevin Burkhardt and Charles Davis.

Former Oregon TE Lyerla overdoses

Former Oregon Ducks tight end Colt Lyerla escaped from a minimum-security prison in Hillsboro, Ore., on Friday and was caught later in the day, according to authorities.

According to KGW, Hillsboro police found the 24-year-old inside a home, overdosed on an unknown drug. Lyerla was transported to a local hospital.

Lyerla, who is serving a six-month jail sentence for forgery, drug possession and DUII stemming from convictions in March, escaped from the Washington County Community Corrections Center located in Hillsboro, a suburb to the west of Portland.

He reportedly opened and escaped through a first-floor window. The alarm alerted authorities, who did a prisoner check and noticed Lyerla was missing.

The 24-year-old Lyerla reportedly will face a second-degree felony charge for the escape.

Kerr expected to miss series vs. Jazz

Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr, sidelined with symptoms from complications following two back surgeries two years ago, is not expected to return during the second-round playoff series against the Utah Jazz.

Kerr, who remains away from the team indefinitely, is seeing a specialist at Duke University Medical Center on Friday and has been receiving treatment aimed at alleviating the symptoms, sources told ESPN.

Kerr has been suffering from complications that cause severe headaches, nausea and dizziness as his symptoms worsened.

Kerr has spent much of the past week consulting with specialists at Stanford Medical Center to find an answer to his chronic pain, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
