The conflict began when County Manager Ron Rabun received an invoice of $18,340 for digital video recording equipment for the county jail. The expenditure was not included in this year’s budget. Rabun suggested the bill be paid from the sheriff’s drug forfeiture account, a move that was opposed by Rachals.

Large crowd attends public hearing to express concerns

Lee’s County’s overall tax millage rate is 32.06 mills. In addition to the 14.206 mills to operate county government, the overall total includes 17.5 mills to operate the public school system. Also included is 0.100 mills to the state to cover administrative fees of collecting the tax and 0.400 to pay a bond issue for the school system.

Commissioners are expected to vote on a $23.45 million spending plan on June 24, a plan that may require a 1.44 mill tax increase. Members of the Lee County Board of Education have already approved a 2.5 mill tax increase this year.
