JOHN BRYANT: After-school kids need supervision

JOHN BRYANT

Two articles in The Herald were spot-on, even though some might not have noticed. The Thumbs Up! article mentioned kids staying after school for parents who work till 5 o’clock. The piece by Tom Purcell about older, bigger kids taking trick-or-treat candy from smaller kids has been going on forever.

From what I gather, the after-school program is for kids ages 5 to 14. The age difference leaves a lot of room for “bullying” and is not dealt with. I would guess that parents don’t want to rock the boat. If too many parents complain, the service might be canceled. The gist of this is that the “powers-that-be” should monitor this service.

I have heard of children that are scared to stay after school and with proper supervision this would not happen. Don’t forget the lunchroom squawks, too.
