More than 1.17 million Georgians expected to travel over the long Independence Day weekend

With 41.5 million people expected to travel over the Fourth of July holiday period, about 85 percent will go by auto. Low gas prices, higher wages and a more optimistic view of the economy are seen as contributing factors for the increased travel, which will be watched closely by increased patrolling on the part of law enforcement.

Authorities say Bryant Johnson received $76,631 by filing fraudulent income tax returns

The case dates back to March 2012 when authorities recovered 65 emergency contact cards stolen from a high school personnel office in the Dougherty County School System. Federal prosecutors said the child who had the cards in his backpack identified Bryant Johnson, who they say had gotten $76,631 in refunds by filing bogus tax returns.

Man in Grady County gets 20 years in prison for severely beating his mother

Jarrod Aubrey Miller is convicted of aggravated battery family violence in Grady County Superior Court

In a case that District Attorney Joseph Mulholland described as “sick and sad,” Jarrod Aubrey Miller is sentenced to 20 years in prison for beating his mother last July, causing facial fractures, a split lip and bruising. The victim, Paulette Miller, died about a month later from unrelated causes.
