BLAKELY — Law enforcement investigators have been inundated with speculation concerning a Sunday incident which resulted in the shooting death of a Blakely woman the stabbing of an NFL defensive end, an official said Monday.

Early County Sheriff Jimmie Murkerson said rumors have been rolling in since a fight broke out at a North Church Street lounge about 1 a.m. Sunday during which New Orleans defensive end Charles Grant was stabbed in the neck.

A pregnant woman, Blakely resident Korynda Reed, 23, died after being shot during the incident.

“They (street talk) have just been so far fetched, off the wall, that we just don’t pay any attention to them at all,” Murkerson said, adding that the stories were likely being “embellished because of Grant’s celebrity status.”

Murkerson asked for anyone who had any “factual” pieces of information to call the Sheriff’s Office at (229) 723-3577.

“We wish the people that are spreading all these rumors, that if they have something factual, they’d come to us,” he said.

The fight started inside the club between two men who had had a previous altercation and Grant told them to “be men” and take it outside, Murkerson said. Running into each other at the club again rekindled emotions from the previous incident and caused Sunday’s incident, Murkerson said.

Several others got involved after the fight moved outside, which Murkerson said included thrown beer bottles.

“For us to say how many was involved, we have no way of knowing. It was a large crowd,” he said.

Reed’s body has been sent for an autopsy and investigators are waiting on ballistics results from bullet wounds she sustained, Murkerson said. Deputies confiscated one pistol in connection with the shooting, though there were multiple firearms used during the incident, he said.

Grant was treated and released from Early Memorial Hospital.

There have been no arrests made in the case, Murkerson said.
