ALBANY — Investigators are still trying to sort out the details surrounding the death of an infant they say may have died after falling into a bucket of cleaning solution Saturday, authorities say.

Albany Police media spokesperson Phyllis Banks said that first responders were unable to revive 1-year-old Asia Brown after she was found lying unresponsive near a mop bucket at a Nottingham North apartment just after 3 p.m. Saturday.

Firefighters performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on Asia until paramedics arrived on scene and took over first-aid. She was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital, Banks said.

The multi-agency Child Death Investigation Unit was notified and responded to the scene, Banks said.

“This is a death investigation,” Banks said, speaking from outside of the apartment complex. “There has been no determination of cause of death, but it appears that the child may have slipped or fallen into a bucket of bleach water.”

Police quickly taped off the apartment complex entrance closest to where the incident took place and began interviewing neighbors.

Banks said that EMS and fire units were initially dispatched when a neighbor called 911. Police weren’t dispatched until EMS officials asked for police assistance at the apartment.

Police wouldn’t elaborate on why they believe the neighbor called, citing an ongoing investigation.

No charges have been filed.
