ALBANY — Willie Banks just wanted to be left alone.

Sitting quietly in the bathtub, the 38-year-old didn’t take too kindly when police officers demanded he get out of the tub with his hands up, so rather than go quietly into that muggy night, a disgruntled but clean Banks fought the law.

The law, and their pepper spray, won.

Charged with burglary, aggravated stalking, and three felony counts of obstruction of police officers, Banks became the newest resident of the Dougherty County Jail Saturday morning after a former friend told police that she awoke to foosteps in her Van Deman Street home and quickly realized they were his.

According to police reports, officers responded to the 1200 block of Van Deman Street just after 4 a.m. and found Brandi Luke distraught and standing outside her home, worried that someone was inside.

When Albany Police Officers Richard Norman and George Camp entered the home they found a man later identified as Banks sitting in the bathtub. Banks reportedly followed the officers’ verbal commands to put his hands up and come out of the lavatory, too well, according to the report.

Banks approached Norman and refused to stop, according to the report, prompting Norman, Camp and officer Chris Brown to attempt to handcuff the man.

Snatching his hands away and wrestling on a nearby couch with the officers, Banks manage to overwhelm the men and made it to his feet, when Norman decided to use his pepper spray to end the fracas, the report says.

Despite being sprayed in the face, Banks continued fighting with the officers before eventually locking himself inside the house.

Officers surrounded the home and called in the tactical unit, who gained entry to the house through a window and eventually arrested Banks, according to the report.

Luke said that she and Banks had previous incidents with each other and had seen him outside the house earlier that evening. That prompted her to call police to check the neighborhood.

Later that night, she reportedly told police that she heard footsteps in her house and called 911 and got a steak knife from the kitchen before fleeing the house, the report says.
