ALBANY — A school police officer was hospitalized briefly Tuesday after an altercation with a student caused him to slip and hit his head on a doorjamb, school officials say.

Early MRI results suggest that Lt. Sam Hill was able to avoid serious injury in the fall, but will require a good number of stitches to close his wound, Dougherty County Schools Spokesperson R.D. Harter said.

“The results of the MRI were negative, so there is no indication that he fractured his skull,” Harter said.

Harter said that two students had got into a fight at Dougherty Comprehensive High School Tuesday morning when Hill attempted to break it up.

“One of the students was more aggressive and refused to cooperate and started fighting back when the officer slipped and fell backwards and hit his head on a doorjamb,” Harter said.

The student, who is a juvenile, will be charged with felony obstruction of a peace officer, disorderly conduct and disrupting school, Harter said.

Harter said that the other student involved in the original fight was not charged in the incident.
