LEESBURG — A well for the U.S. Geological Survey was damaged by vandals seeking metal, investigators say.

Around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, deputies responded to the 900 block of Airport Road in Leesburg in reference to damaged property, incident reports show.

Upon arrival, deputies met with Owen Holloway — an employee of the USGS — who said the organization had a contract with Peter Long to operate two small wells on land off Airport Road to monitor and test water levels.

When Holloway arrived at the site to record the readings from the well, he noticed that two aluminum hoods, which were attached to the top of the wells by a hinge, were missing, the reports says.

Holloway told deputies the batteries and motors for the wells had been flipped over onto the units.

An aluminum box on one of the wells was also missing, and Holloway told deputies he wasn’t sure if the recording equipment inside the wells was still working.

Holloway told deputies the last reading from the well was logged at 10 a.m. on August 18 and that after that time the signal from the wells was lost, the reports said.

Damage to the wells is estimated to be around $4,000, the report says.
