This does not necessarily mean that those with other blood types cannot participate.
The O drive is targeted for type O, but we still need all types, American Red Cross Donor Recruitment Representative for Albany Andrew Everett said. We are in immediate need for all types.
Type O is especially needed because it is the universal donor. Approximately 42 percent of the national population is type O. Everett estimates that a person needs blood every two seconds.
We need new donors to keep up the supply, Everett said.
In Doughertys case, less than three percent of the age-eligible population donates blood, with most donating only once.
The need for blood is constant, and there is no substitute, Everett. This is why it is important for people to donate. Consistency is key.
The American Red Cross supply for O+ is at half-a-days supply as of Friday morning. However, the shortage has not compromised surgery schedules in the areas individual hospitals, Everett said.
We dont know of any surgeries being canceled. Things are beginning to look better, but we do need blood, Everett said.
In the immediate future, the Red Cross will be hosting additional blood drives. The dates and times include: Monday at Darton College, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Wednesday at Portfield Methodist Church, 2:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.; Thursday at Miller Brewery, 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.; Friday at First Baptist Church in Americus, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Phoebe will be hosting another type O drive Dec. 13.
Diane Fford, the blood bank manager for Phoebe Putney, was unavailable for comment Friday.
