CAMILLA — Mitchell County coach Derrick Silas was happy with his team’s effort, but there was no changing the bottom line after his team’s 35-20 loss Friday night at Cook.

“They outplayed us,” he said. “They were better than us tonight.”

Cook (3-3 overall, 2-1 in Region 1-AA) jumped out to a 28-0 lead at halftime against Mitchell and never looked back. The Eagles got late scores from Ulysess Lambert, who forced a fumble and returned it for a touchdown, and a pass from Derrick Davis to Jessie Atkins. But the outcome had long been decided.

Mitchell (1-5, 0-3) next plays Albany on Thursday at Hugh Mills Stadium.

CALHOUN COUNTY 28, RANDOLPH-CLAY 14:

The Calhoun County coaches wouldn’t call Friday night Freddie King’s best in his Cougars career. But it sure was close.

Without the final stats in hand, they could only estimate he tossed for nearly 300 yards, but the exact time he helped Calhoun Co. pull out a 28-14 win against Randolph-Clay was clear.

King broke a 14-14 tie in the fourth quarter when he hit Jimmy Glover on a deep touchdown pass to create a lead the Cougars (3-4 overall, 1-1 in Region 1-A) wouldn’t relinquish.

As Calhoun County ran out the clock late Jaccori Cannon busted a run 60 yards for a touchdown to seal the win.
