ALBANY — The Albany State men’s and women’s basketball teams will kick off the season with a “Midnight Madness” practice session today, with pre-practice festivities beginning at 10:30 p.m. at the HPER Gymnasium. This will be the school’s first “Midnight Madness” since 2005 and admission is free.

“Basically, this is just kicking off the basketball year with the same atmosphere that many other schools around the country will have,” said Chris Cameron, who is about to begin his second season as the Rams’ full-time coach. He was interim coach when the Rams won the 2007 SIAC tournament championship.

Before the midnight practice, which marks the earliest time NCAA basketball teams can begin official basketball practice, activities include a slam-dunk contest, 3-point shootout, scrimmage and two-ball contest with each team having a Rams and Lady Rams player on teams.

“It will be good for the community, the kids and the institution,” Lady Rams coach Robert Skinner said of the midnight-practice festivites. “It will be the first time we brought everybody together in an organized atmosphere because everything they’ve been doing had been on their own.”
