ALBANY — An Albany Police officer who accidentally discarded sensitive materials in a Dumpster on the 2800 block of Dawson Road has been disciplined, an APD spokeperson said Monday.

Officer Rodney Brown admitted he’d discarded the materials immediately after officers were notified at roll call Friday they were found, APD Media Manager Phyllis Banks said.

Brown said he was cleaning out his car during a midnight shift and inadvertently threw away some documents that contained sensitive information, a statement issued by Banks on Monday said.

The incident raised awareness about security issues and APD Chief James Younger plans a departmentwide review of procedures to ensure it does not happen again, Banks said.

Also Monday, an APD officer was injured while making a left turn in her police cruiser on Newton Road.

Lt. Wendy Luster was turning left at a green light on Newton Road onto South Jefferson Street around 2:20 p.m. Monday when she was struck by a gold Lexus.

Robert Graper, 64, was driving south on Jefferson when he failed to stop at a red light and crashed into the APD cruiser, Banks said.

The incident remains under investigation and charges are pending.
