ALBANY — Now that Albany Tech is an official NJCAA Region XVII men’s basketball team, coach Sylvester Patterson will lead his Titans into their first hosted tournament Friday and Saturday at Albany State’s HPER Gymnasium.

The Titan Invitational will feature six teams, including Albany Tech and Turner Job Corps, and Patterson’s team faces Ware Prep at 8 p.m. Friday and Sound Doctrine Academy at 7 p.m. Saturday.

Admission is $5, and high school students are admitted free Saturday.

The Titans beat Moody AFB in overtime Tuesday, and had played five games during a nine-day stretch. Patterson’s team is 4-1 with its only loss being a convincing one against Northwest Florida State during this past weekend.

Truett O’Neal is averaging 15 points, followed by Demarcus Blunt and Marcus Jackson with an average of 13 each.

This weekend, Albany Tech will be glad to be home — soft of, considering its home games are at Albany State.

“We have been home once out of five games,” Patterson said. “We don’t play that many at home (12 in all). It gives the players a chance to play in front of family and friends and that usually leads to them playing better. When you’re on a string like (five games in nine days), you want to play some home games.

Other games include Ware Prep against Turner Job Corps at 4 p.m. Friday, followed by Sound Doctrine against Gordon at 6 p.m. Then on Saturday, Ware Prep plays Turner again at 3, followed by Ware Prep against Gordon at 5.

DARTON SWIMMING:

Darton College’s men’s swimming team placed second at Sewanee, Tenn., and the women were third, giving coach David Hughes’ team a second-place overall finish last Saturday. Amanda Burnette had three second-place finishes and Trisha Bailey placed third in four events.

Cavalier Zach Lopez even was named the top male swimmer, winning four races (50 breaststroke, 100 breaststroke, 200 breaststroke and 100 individual medley). His wins in the 100 individual medley and 100 breaststroke set meet records. Teammate Chip Aplin was first in three events (50 backstroke, 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle) and Kyle Newhouse won in the 1,650 and 200 freestyle events (he set a meet record in the 200 freestyle).

Chris Rojas was first in the 50 and 100 butterfly and Aviv Sela won the 400 individual medley while setting a meet record. And also, Kent Lawrence won the 200 butterfly and the 200 medley relay team of Aplin, Sela, Rojas and Lopez also finished first.

DARTON WRESTLING:

Darton’s wrestling team posted two second-place finishes and also a fourth-place finish last Saturday at The Citadel. Travis Hendrix (133 pounds) lost in the final, and Andrew Boley wrestled up a class to 197 and finished fourth. The most impressive outing, however, at 141 was by Nathan Allen, who lost in his class’ final.
