ALBANY — The hills are alive this weekend as Sherwood Christian Academy presents its stage production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “The Sound of Music.”

Performances begin at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, with a 1 p.m. matinee also set for Saturday. All performances will be held at Darton College Theater, 2400 Gillionville Road.

Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 at the door. They are available at both Sherwood Academy campuses and at Sherwood Baptist Church.

The final collaboration between composers Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein, “The Sound of Music” has graced the Broadway stage and both the silver screen and television for five decades.

Set in Austria at the onset of World War II, the musical tells the story of Maria, a young postulate who is sent to serve as a governess for the Von Trapps, seven children of a strict widowed naval captain.

“Her growing rapport with the youngsters, coupled with her generosity of spirit, gradually captures the heart of the stern captain,” a news release states, “and they marry.”

But after the couple return from their honeymoon, they discover their homeland has been invaded by Nazis who demand the captain serves their navy.

“The family’s narrow escape over the mountains to Switzerland on the eve of World War II provides one of the most thrilling and inspirational finales ever presented in the theater,” the release states.

This weekend’s production stars Amy Lincoln, Katie Foster, Casey Thurmond, Reed Reynolds, Lyndsey Short, Rachel Reynolds, Sara Frances Short, Rachel Knuckles, Chris Schmeltzer, Julianna Smith, Wesley Edmunds, Erin Grace Baty and Nathan Warfel.

“Join us for a time of adventure, music and romance as Maria wins the heart of the children and their father,” the release states.
