Girls Incorporated of Albany held a special news conference to announce their receipt of the 2008 Affiliate Award at the organization’s Park Place Center Thursday.
“It feels really good. We get to keep this award for a year and will hopefully bring it back next year,” said executive director LaKisha Bryant.
The Affiliate of the Year award is one of the highest awards that a Girls Incorporated affiliate can receive, a news release from the organization said.
“This is the best thing that has happened to us in a while,” said board president Karen Wakeford. “We are thrilled to have the recognition.”
Girls Incorporated of Albany competed with communities in nine states within the organization’s southeastern region for the award. Judging categories are trustee involvement and governance, advocacy and programming.
“It speaks very highly that we can excel in all three areas,” said Bryant. “Its an awesome validation and boost of energy.”
Present at the press conference was United Way of Southwest Georgia President and CEO Dwayne Myles.
“Girls Incorporated has made a great impact,” he said. “Its good to invest in an organization that has a great return.”
The award is presented each year by the organization’s national office.
On Dec. 1, Girls Incorporated of Albany Board of Trustees will begin their annual “Be-a-Friend Campaign.”
In 2007, Girls
Incorporated of Albany served over 2,200 girls in their after-school and summer programs in Dougherty County and Terrell County. The organization has had national status since 1945, and has been in the Albany area since 1974.
