I would be interested in the structure below the two asst city mgrs since the overhead grows as you go down the pyramid. The two don't sound that bad for a govt this size. How many legal people are needed to screw in the light bulb may be worth a look.

The city needs an operational audit/evaluation that looks at economy and efficiency as well as manpower structure. Financial audits do not identify opportunities for savings as we see each year in financial audits of the city and,the DCSS. Look at the rat's nest involving how DCSS has been operating for the last many years as an example of what is not looked at under the sheets. What have financial audits identified?

Government is never a paragon of efficiency or economy but we never seem to get beyond financial matters affecting record keeping/balance sheet et al. How business is done is not the primary consideration on a financial audit.

Is this the budget year when the $1 million guaranteed to Chehaw expires? That's a big honking hunk of change to be cut out. And although DCED is theoretically self supporting, I question where the money comes from to maintain the 1,200 housing units owned by the city. What price tag is really attached to DCED and its activities? Bite the bullet and "just say no" to money for any non-profits or their activities.

Although tax records show 24% of all property value in DoCo is tax exempt, the real value is at least double that figure. It is time for the county, as administrator of the property tax program, to admit to this fact, put on its big boy britches, and come up with the right numbers which would support the dire need for a different way to tax--property tax has been strained beyond reasonable limits. Taylor knows these numbers are wrong and he will have to be the one leading the charge to get things more accurate since the likely outcome would require actions by the state who will need convincing.

Is what is left of a decimated downtown enough to ever sustain itself without continual support with public monies?. Will a handful of residents downtown generate an influx businesses? Or, will a handful of businesses generate an influx or residents? Perhaps a bigger question is "Is there even a glass to be half full or half empty?".

Beware those who say they will buy downtown to live when a "yes" has no financial commitment. The Squawk indicates the units will be rented but to make thing work, is should be "sales".

Albany Heights is supposedly being foreclosed on because the owner with a DCED loan has not made a payment in years. This building will be a target for the next group of apartments hopefully with private money. Years of neglect will make this an expensive effort.

But if the renovation is successful,, wouldn't it be nice to sit a your expensive window and watch panhandlers work the crowd at the newly renovated library?

If the person is eligible to retire and DCSS decides to fire them, the person is still eligible for retirement and will draw their money. Firing won't cut off retirement pay so let's go the easy route.

Heck, one of these folks with not much of a life came from Tuscaloosa and a couple from Indiana heard about it and drove over from I-75 to join the camp out. We need to seize the moment, harness the momentum, and sell them tickets to the RQ, and ACRI. Gives support to concerns on whether folks would come to see the future Paula Deen Hall of Butter Museum, ya'll!
