I may have spoken these word's without thinking .... I apologize and certainly did not mean to call anyone a racist! I know that change is hard especially when a school has found a comfortable situation. I also know that there is more to this decision than just pure athletic competition. I certainly did not mean to offend anyone at DWS or on the Board. I am just disappointed for the kids who practice day in and day out and are interested in great competition and great sportsmanship.
Deerfield parents are uninformed and so afraid of social interaction with the world outside their bubble!! This is nothing but a racist decision from a Segregation school .... lets just call it what it is! Won't they feel great when they are the big fish in a DRY pond!! They have now taken the competition out of sports .... Congratulations DWS Board of Trustees, your true colors are flying loud and clear and they are not Red & Blue. This vote/decesion is laughable at best and pitiful at the heart of it all! Where are the leaders at the school and why aren't they standing up for what is right and fair? Board members can keep their lily white environment but at the same time they hope to attract great athletes to enroll through the "Goal Program". I ask you why would an athlete want to come to DWS to play schools that are less than half their size and skill level. There is no one left to play!! A very sad day for this DWS parent of four student athletes! By the way ... did anyone on the Board bother to actually talk to the student athletes?
Also a big shout out from a senior parent to the many juniors who helped our senior boys win this championship!! Although your names are not mentioned here.... they are etched in our heart and we will never forget how much grit the Juniors brought to this team! I predict another championship next year!! Way to go Knights ... this is a first class football team and program!
This "Run of the Mill" team worked very hard to win back the Region Title for DWS and has already defeated 3 of the remaining 8 teams three times each this season!! This "Run Of The Mill" Team was cheated out of a clear path to the Elite 8 by an unethical coach who laid down for a number Five seeded team that DWS had defeated three times this season so that his son's dream team could march straight down the path that DWS earned as the number One Region Seed. This unethical coach played Chess with the GISA basketball tournament brackets and said "checkmate" to DWS rather than go down in the semi finals or quarter finals to Mt. Vernon!! Let's all call a spade a spade! DWS was not another run of the mill team .... they probably would have lost to this team but certainly not in the first round if the brackets had not been manipulated by an unethical coach!
Coach Gruhl is truly a great coach! Just look at what he is doing this season with his team which lost two of their three superstars from last year. Tyrone Culbreath left to return to AHS and Banks Kinslow graduated. Still they were able to regain their Region Championship Title because of their great teamwork, strong bench and great coaching! Go Knights .... Thanks Coach Gruhl! Our son is lucky to have played for you.
This was a great article on the DWS Girls Basketball team; they are a hard-working group of girls led by great coach! What about the Boys??!!!
There was no coverage at all for the New GISA Region Champs who regained the Region Title this year after losing it last year even though they had three much heralded players last year. I think that the DWS Boys team this year has an entire bench full of talented players that work like as a team. They are young with no seniors but full of guts and they really play well together. I think they could beat many public school teams if they had a chance to play. They usually fly well under the radar screen of the Albany Herald. But they certainly deserved a small paragraph after regaining the region title even though they lost Tyrone Culbreath to Albany High and graduated Banks Kinslow. You are missing a story here. Many of these boys have been playing basketball together since they were 6 or 7 years old by competing on YMCA teams and summer camps. They have really played together as a team coached well by Gordy Gruhl and I predict they will be in the GISA state finals. Please give them a nod once in a while!
