pberthoty 1 year, 4 months ago on Veterans 'Supermarket of Benefits' draws large crowd

VietVet. (and others) At the entrance (or exiting) of the main auditorium of the SVB was a recruiting booth from the local VFW Post. We assisted Veterans that could not stand. One vet had stints and I got chairs for him and his son. There were others who also sat in chairs that I obtained for them to sit on. This was the 2nd biggest and my first. At the SVB at Waycross, only 19 vets showed up. Maybe they will learn what I have been telling our local government that we have the largest concentration of veterans in SW Ga. and be more coodinated in the future. There was a lot more publicity and support from local government for this latest SVB. The last one in Albany was at the Armory. I am the Commander of Albany's VFW and don't even have a VA card. I served in SE Asia in 67;68 & 69 and Korea and was on Fox TV trying to apply for benefits, but do not qualify since I don't have any service-connected claim. However, I am on the agent-orange list in case a symptom comes up and thought I could do the same with the VA. The brochures for State and Federal benefits were handy and I may be able to get a service license tag. You would be surprised how many vets don't know they can get a free drivers license. The residence requirements have been reduced to 2 years, less than when I first came to Ga. Ga. is one of the States that give a lot of benefits and appreciate our Veterans.

Post 182 is the Leesburg American Legion and 30 is the Albany American Legion, not the VFW. The Albany VFW is Post 2785. Maybe "ill managed" before, but this is a new VFW 2785 with new ideas and a dedicated new Commander and his officers who are striving to improve the VFW. The CO & his Sr. Vice have been spending hundreds of hours at the VFW to improve it in the last 3 months. There are bands now on Friday and Saturday nights, with a swap meet the first Saturday of each month. An added pool table moved up into the main dance hall to be used, amusement machines and new TV's and a lounge with X-box and WiFi through self-improved management at NO COST. It takes money to improve a facility and it is no longer "ill-managed". Come by now and you will see the changes to attract the younger veterans and they are slowly signing up. By January 2013, the front area will be improved with better lighting, new doors and signs. It takes money and all the improvements that have been made so far cost nothing, just time, energy and the desire to improve the facility. If you google it's history, the VFW's purpose since 1899 is to help veterans and no one does more. It is the largest American organization of combat veterans. The American Legion is comprlsed of veterans who have served during certain time periods. Both veterans organizations needs the support of younger members. I agree with JROK. Quit Griping and come to our post and start making a difference!

In order to maintain a non-profit status, Legion and VFW's have to conform to certain requirements such as local and area programs for veterans and the community. The IRS has been scrutinizing these facilities and has been shutting many down for not filing proper Form 990's. The organizations that govern themselves have been checking that the posts in the departments throughout their organization comply with those requirements. VFW and Legions posts throughout are hurting for membership and are trying to attract those since Vietnam. Once made up of mostly WWII veterans (there are no living WWI left) and they are up in age as well and don't participate anymore as well as the VN vets who are getting on in age. The younger troops are not joining to renew the organizations to replace the older vets and have been opening up their posts to the public, like dance and such like our local posts in Albany. Support your local VFW and American Legion Posts.

Finished watching a lot of Olympics and as a veteran who fought for our flag, I am very disappointed in seeing some of our prominent American athletes, including Gabby Douglas, a wrestling gold medalist and other American athletes, just standing there holding their bouquet of flowers and not paying the proper respect during the playing of our national anthem.

I helped in the 1st two Downtown Mardi Gras events. Years later, the bike race and Marathon has been added. I am not a runner, but a race in Albany that is a qualifier for the Boston Marathon...that's something. I have been a volunteer for the past few years. One year I worked the 13 mile with a police officer and I am glad she was there. I had no problems with the runners, just the cars that tried to drive through or around the barricades. All the publicity and the maps that were out there and still it was unbelievable what drivers tried to do. (were you out there coach?) This year I volunteered for both the dinner for the runners and finish line at the Marathon. (Ben Roberts of WALB & I stood in the pouring rain and Tstorms, handing out finish medals) I had a chance to talk to a lot of people and the staff at the Hilton during the dinner. The Hilton was filled and other runners from Niarobi and Germany were either staying there or at other hotels. It brings over $2 million to Albany. What impressed me the most in living in this so-called "Good Life City" for almost 30 years (I cringe when I hear it called that) was that it lived up to that name. Staff members went to bed at 2 AM and got up at 5 AM or earlier. There were over 700 volunteers that helped out and each was an ambassador to the Albany area...and that's what we need here to live up to that name. I hope that Albany will come out to support the downtown Mardi Gras and continue to make it a success.

I applaud DOCO and the SO in catching these criminals. They committed a crime against Hispanic people who were reluctant to talk about the crime because where they come from, they fear the police. Through the efforts of a few interpreters, they were able to convince the victims to cooperate and in such, took some scum off the streets so they don't have a chance to prey on us.

From the Websters Dictionary- Monopoly: Exclusive control of a commodity or service. Monopoly: A game played upon a board in which the players try to accumulate token real estate parcels and put each other out of business. Hmmm. Which one does Phobe fit? (take the board part out and it fits both)

pberthoty 2 years, 2 months ago on Albany Marine Band farewell concert set

The Albany Marine Corps Band is one of 12 Marine Bands that play all over the country, not only in Albany. They have won Marine Corps Band of the Year for 2 years running and for that notariety, will be deactivated, along with the Marine Band at 29 Palms, Ca. How many times has the President's Own played in Albany? I just missed seeing them in October at Panama City. I don't know what you are talking about HQMC band, unless you are referring to the US Marine Corps Band. The U.S.Marine Corps Band is entirely separate from its sister military band, the United States Marine Drum and Bugle Corps "The Commandant's Own" and the 12 active duty Marine Corps field bands of which Albany is part of. It is commonly referred to the "Presidents Own" and they do not have to go through recruit trainng or combat as do the other bands. They are professional musicians.

OK, so Pheobe has 3800 and the Marine Base now has 3000. They lost a lot of Marines. Phoebe is gobbling up all the hospitals but at one time the base had a lot more Marines and it is still listed at one of the largest employees in Albany. Semantics aside, why wait for BRAC? An award winning band for 2 years has already been deactivated. Years ago, Moody AFB in Valdosta won the best AF base in the US award and they made the BRAC closure. No one believed it, but, the people fought against it and won. A hurricane came through Albany in the mid-80's and dropped 2 pine trees on my house at midnight and caused a lot of damage in the area. It came up from the Southeast, so if you have to evacuate the county to the West, you are going to have to cross the Flint river. According to the GDOT and City, there aren't enought bridges to evacuate across the Flint if needed. Interestingly, the Broad Ave bridge was the 1st to open after the flood.

Very well written article. The Albany Marine Corps Band is gone and now BRAC will be deciding on the Marine Base. How about a group trying to save the base now, not at the last minute. It is the largest employer in Albany. The closing of Firestone and Cooper will be nothing compared to losing the Marine Base.
