ALBANY — Darton nursing student, Ralph (Buck) Mueller, has been selected to receive a $1,000 scholarship from Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society as a 2014 Coca-Cola Leader of Promise Scholar.
Independent judges evaluated more than 900 applications worldwide to choose the few selected Phi Theta Kappa members as the 2014 Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholars. The scholars are chosen based on scholastic achievement, community service and leadership potential.
“I am honored to receive this scholarship and am thankful for the opportunity to pursue my education at Darton.” Mueller said. “In my experience, Darton is living up to its great reputation in nursing and all of the teachers, faculty and staff have been very helpful.”
Mueller worked as a firefighter for the Albany Fire Department for nine years before deciding to go back to school.
“I am most grateful for the support of my wife, Lauren Mueller,” he said. “She not only supports my going back to school but also encourages me every step of the way. I could not do this without her.”
While he stays busy with a wife, three-year old son and one child on the way, he has managed to excel academically and continues to be a service leader by volunteering at events such as Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital’s Women’s Health Day. During Darton’s Week of Service, Mueller joined other Darton students taking blood pressures for the community with Darton Association of Nursing Students (DANS) and boxing books from the Sigma Kappa Delta’s book drive.
Mueller’s goal is to continue his nursing education to obtain his BSN and eventually his Masters. Once completing his education, Mueller wants to work “on the trauma side of things” as an ER nurse with an ultimate goal of becoming an anesthetist.
Darton State College’s Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society Chapter, Chi Xi, has won several nationally recognized and distinguished awards. Its continued recognition of out-standing students through national awards and scholarships speaks volumes to the strength of Darton students and the Chi Xi chapter.
