High school baseball season is all but over in southwest Georgia and Region 1-AAAA has announced its All-Region selections.
Cairo’s Garrett Gainous was named the region’s Player of the Year, while Cairo coach Chad Parkerson was selected as Coach of the Year.
Colton Joyner of Northside Columbus took the title of Pitcher of the Year. Four Westover Patriots were among those selected for region honors. The Patriots finished 10-16 on the season and 9-8 in the region. Cairo won the region ahead of Columbus, Hardaway and Northside Columbus.
Westover’s Kedarrius Cunningham was named to the Region 1-AAAA first team as designated hitter/utility player. Cameron Hopkins at second base and La’Borris Buchanan in the outfield were selected to second team. Daymon Polite earned an honorable mention.
Buchanan led the region in batting average with a .484 average. He also had a .556 on base percentage, stole 36 bases, scored 23 runs and batted in 13 runs. Cunningham hit .403, scored 17 runs and stole 19 bases. Hopkins batted .494 with 24 stolen bases, 24 runs scored and 20 RBIs. Polite hit .321 for the year with 10 RBIs, 20 runs scored and 21 stolen bases.
