The Lee County Lady Trojans (1-1) started great Friday afternoon against the Cardinals of Jonesboro High and pulled ahead 10-2 to start the game using an oppressive defense that created turnovers and easy points for Lee. That didn’t continue, however, and Jonesboro took the win 49-45 in the Thanksgiving Shootout at Monroe High School.
The game was tight most of the way with both teams using their speed and aggressive defense to stop each other, but the Lady Cardinals pulled away in the second half. After trailing only 24-21 at the half, the Lady Trojans found themselves down 43-29 early in the fourth quarter. Lee County was getting plenty of opportunities for points but could not get the ball into the hoop for points. The Lady Trojans were missing both field shots and free throws as they fell further behind. Head Coach Tondra Davis called a timeout and things started to turn around for the Lady Trojans. It started when Erica Irby, Jakailyn Poole and Cayla Boyd each hit two free throws. Poole added a couple of under the basket shots that finally started to drop in and the Lady Trojans had pulled to within 43-40 with less than two minutes to play. Still the Lady Trojans had trouble at the free throw line and had opportunities to get the lead but could not convert.
With less than a minute to play, Lee County was called once for traveling and threw the ball away trying to hurry down the court another time.
Poole was the high scorer for Lee County with 15 points.
