The Terrell Academy Eagles will play for the GISA state baseball championship this weekend in Macon after winning a weather-delayed game over Piedmont Academy on Monday afternoon in Monticello.
The Eagles will meet Edmund Burke Academy in the state finals at Mercer University. Game 1 is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Friday and Game 2 will begin Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m. with Game 3 to follow if needed.
Terrell Academy edged Piedmont Academy 3-2 Monday afternoon in Saturday’s game. Weather ended the game in the first inning.
In the top of the sixth inning Monday, Ross West walked and Landon Cory followed with a single. After a pitching change, West moved to third on a passed ball and scored on a double play ball hit by Jake Donalson.
Going into the fifth inning the teams were tied 2-2 when each team scored in the third and fifth innings. Myers scored in the fifth on an error by the Piedmont shortstop on a sharply hit ball by Cameron Jones. The Eagles had gotten on the board first in the third inning with a line drive single to center by Garrett Sloan that drove in Landon Cory, who had reached on a fielder’s choice.
The Eagles pounded out nine hits and took advantage of four errors by the Cougars. Sloan pitched the first four and 2/3 innings to record the win on the mound. He gave up one run on one hit — a home run in the third inning. He struck out seven batters. Ethan Gay pitched the remainder of the game for the Eagles, giving up one run on three hits.
Ross West led at the plate for the Eagles with two hits, including a double, in two at- bats and a run scored. Landon Cory had two hits in three at bats and scored a run. Daniel Myers was 1-2 with a single, a walk and a run scored.
The Eagles (24-6) will take on Edmund Burke (15-5), who advanced by beating Crisp Academy in round two and then St. Andrews in the semi-finals.
