ALBANY – Wednesday’s weather may alter the schedule but the Golden Rams won’t have to endure a long bus ride this week to play baseball. After being on the road the last two weeks and four out of the last five, the Golden Rams have an eight-game homestand scheduled to begin Wednesday afternoon against Columbus State (21-14) and then a weekend series against SIAC foe Morehouse (14-21).
Albany State freshman Sebastian Griffeth from Calvary Christian School in Columbus, is scheduled to start the game on the mound against the Cougars Wednesday. Griffeth opened the series on the mound in Atlanta as well, pitching three innings and giving up one hit, one walk, and no runs. He struck out one batter.
Albany State (22-7, 19-2) swept three games from Clark Atlanta this past weekend and have extended their lead atop the SIAC standings to four games ahead of Savannah State and Spring Hill College, tied for second. The three wins in Atlanta pushed the Golden Rams’ winning streak to 13 games.
“I was really proud of our team this weekend,” said Albany State coach Scot Hemmings. “We have been on the road four out of the last five weekends so I knew we were tired. But our team competed and executed at a high level all weekend. Our defense was as good as I have seen in 13 years here.”
“We now have to quickly turn our attention to an outstanding Columbus State team and a hot Morehouse team. Both will be very well coached and ready to come in here and win,” Hemmings said. “I challenged our team today to not get used to winning and keep working to improve. We cannot think too highly of ourselves because this game has a way of humbling you quickly.”
During the weekend in Atlanta, the Golden Rams outscored Clark 34-9 and hit four home runs. Zane Ross belted two homers, while Jonathan Logsdon and Nathan Saavedra hit one each. Logsdon, a senior from Leesburg, is leading the team at the plate with a .433 batting average that includes four home runs and 30 RBI.
Wednesday’s game at Albany State West is scheduled to begin at 5:00 p.m.
The weekend series with Morehouse begins Friday at 5 p.m. with Saturday games scheduled to begin at Noon and 3 p.m.
