ALBANY — Officials with Flint River Fresh announced recently the addition of a new Garden Manager, Kaitlyn McGee.
McGee will work to sustain community food production spaces, provide more healthy food access points and do-it-yourself food gardening education for the community. The new garden manager will be an integral part of Flint River Fresh’s partnership with the Commodore Conyers College and Career (4C) Academy to open an earth-to-table produce market in downtown Albany.
McGee earned a degree in science from Albany State University and a degree in accounting from Albany Technical College after graduating from Dougherty High School.
“I hope to impact my peers and motivate them to learn about agriculture and self-sustainability,” McGee said. “My love for gardening and sharing encourages me to work with food accessibility, local farmers, youth, and conservation experts. It’s never too late to start growing.”
McGee’s passion for agriculture and urban farming flourished during her volunteerism with Flint River Fresh community gardens. As garden manager, she will reinforce Flint River Fresh’s response to food insecurity and hunger with a focus on increasing access to fresh fruits and vegetables in food deserts across southwest Georgia. Also, she will help sustain vibrant community and school gardens in the Flint River District.
McGee joins Flint River Fresh via a grant-funded position through the USDA Agriculture & Innovative Production Program to help accomplish Flint River Fresh’s mission to increase access to fresh, local, affordable, healthy food for southwest Georgia citizens, create new economic opportunities for local farmers, develop young people through agriculture, and conserve natural resources for future generations.
