ALBANY — Dougherty County Commissioner Anthony Jones accepted the gavel as chairman of the Southwest Georgia Regional Commission on Feb. 24.

Jones will chair the multicounty agency headquartered in Camilla.

In the new position, “I will chair Executive Committee meetings and preside over the monthly meetings,” Jones said.

The chairman also appoints committees and is authorized to authenticate by signature the resolutions, contracts and other documents adopted by the council. He also will serve as a member of the board of directors for the Georgia Association of Regional Commissions.

The Dougherty County commissioner succeeds Colquitt County Commissioner Paul Nagy, who served in the position for several years.

Jones was named as a member of the SWGRC in 2015 and has served as vice chairman since 2016. He retired from his position as 4-H youth development coordinator and county extension director after 24 years with Dougherty County Extension Service.

The SWGRC is one of 12 public agencies in the state, created by the Georgia Planning Act, to assist local governments on a regional basis and assist in establishing coordinated and comprehensive planning for the state.
