ALBANY — Kavarious Brown, 19, has been charged with murder in the shooting death late Saturday night of 20-year-old Ashanti Major, who died of her injuries after being transported by EMS to Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital.

A series of releases from the Albany Police Department sent to media Saturday and Sunday indicate that Brown was taken into custody just before midnight Saturday after shooting two victims at 3512 Royal Scott Road. The latest release, which reached media early Sunday afternoon, said that Major had died of injuries suffered in the incident, and that a second shooting victim, Alan Moore, 44, had also been transported to Phoebe.

The initial investigation revealed that Gloria Jackson, 41, was struck in the face while she was sleeping by Moore, her husband. Officers spoke with Jackson and she said that the situation turned physical so she called her daughter (Major) and told her what Moore had done to her. Jackson then called 911, according to the latest APD news release.

Major and Gloria Jackson’s son, Brown, arrived at the residence shortly after receiving the call from Jackson. They witnessed Moore still fighting with Jackson. Brown and Major attempted to shield Jackson from Moore. Moore started pushing Brown, and Brown pulled out a gun and fired the weapon. Both Moore and Major were wounded and transported to the hospital by EMS.
