Holiday events planned this month at Thronateeska Heritage Center
Children to learn about snow, lighted ornament making this month at Thronateeska
From Staff Reports
ALBANY — Several events taking place at Thronateeska Heritage Center this month will be inspired by the holiday season, some of which are focused on a weather spectacle not often seen in south Georgia.
From 10:30-11 a.m. Thursday in the science museum, children ages 3 and up are invited to join in on Toddlersaurus Time. Attendees will learn through crafts, stories and experiments about snow. The event is free for members, $3 for non-members.
Science Saturday is set for 11 a.m.-noon p.m. on Saturday in the science museum. Best suited for ages 5 and up, youngsters will be able to make their own snow — something children in the Albany area will have slim chances of seeing in their front yards during the winter months. It is free for members, $3.50 for non-members.
The week before Christmas Day, on Dec. 19 and 20, Thronateeska is hosting a Holiday Day Camp from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Parents or guardians with last-minute shopping to do can drop off their children at the camp, where they will spend the day doing winter-themed science experiments, arts and crafts, and discovering the animals at the Flint RiverQuarium.
Officials at the center said half days for the camp are available. The cost is $20 a day for members, $40 a day for non-members.
The special events at the center will wrap up this month with another Science Saturday from 11 a.m.-noon on Dec. 23 in the science museum. Children ages 5 and up coming in will learn how to create lighted ornaments, a favorite for people of all ages during the holiday season. Reservations for this Science Saturday are required.
Thronateeska guests are invited to also enjoy the traditional holiday exhibit in the history museum, “Santa on Main,” that opened this year on Nov. 25. It features more than 3,000 depictions of Santa Claus from artist Don Fisher’s personal collection.
This year’s exhibit brings to life the North Pole elf’s downtown district. The exhibit will be open Thursdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. until Jan. 6.
