MILLEDGEVILLE — NewDay USA is expected to announce next week that scholarships will be made available to children of deployed Georgia National Guard soldiers to attend Georgia Military College Preparatory School.

On Monday, NewDay USA, accompanied by Brig. Gen. Randall Simmons, commanding general of the Georgia Army National Guard, will make an announcement for the new scholarship opportunity as well as present another scholarship to a student of GMC Prep. Rob Posner, CEO and president of NewDay USA, NewDay USA Executive Chair retired Rear Adm. Thomas Lynch and GMC leadership will also be present to make the announcement — which will take place in the legislative chambers at the institution’s main campus in Milledgeville.

GMC has several campuses throughout the state, including one across the street from Albany Technical College. The Georgia National Guard’s 48th Infantry Brigade is sending off roughly 2,100 soldiers to Afghanistan by early next year for a period of nine months.

Officials with GMC said that, with the imminent deployment of the 48th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, GMC Prep School and NewDay USA, a Veterans Administration mortgage company that serves veterans and their families, have teamed up to provide a scholarship opportunity to children in impacted families.

“NewDay USA will award a full scholarship to any child or children of a member of the Georgia National Guard 48th IBCT that is deploying to Afghanistan to attend Georgia Military College Preparatory School, grades 3-12, on a full scholarship,” a news release from GMC said. “The annual tuition of $5,250 will be paid for by NewDay USA for any child of a soldier in the Georgia National Guard that deploys to Afghanistan.

“This scholarship is good for the entire time the child or children attend Georgia Military College Preparatory School, their only requirement is to keep up their grades and discipline.”

With the holidays coming up along with the deployment, GMC President Lt. Gen. William B. Caldwell IV said this is the perfect time for NewDay USA to announce this opportunity.

“We don’t want any Georgia National Guard deployed parent, or family of those deployed, to have to worry about their child receiving a great education,” Caldwell said. “NewDay USA is so generous to provide the funds to create this opportunity for the children of military families to attend GMC Prep School where they will develop the intellect, and elevate their character of each student.”

The NewDay USA Foundation has awarded full-tuition scholarships to high school students at 13 military schools in 11 states, which includes 13 scholarships given to GMC Prep School cadets since 2016. NewDay USA scholarships are provided to students who have a parent or guardian who is a fallen or a fully disabled veteran as a result of their deployment.

Scholarship recipients, or “NewDay Scholars,” initially were only for Gold Star family members — or students who have lost a parent in the Global War on Terror. Now it will expand to those National Guard families who have served in the war.
