ALBANY – A 19-year-old man was killed on Friday morning in an apparent drive-by shooting in south Albany.

Aaron Donye Shade was pronounced dead at about 1:35 a.m. at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital, Coroner Michael Fowler said. Shade was struck by a single bullet.

The shooting occurred at the Mt. Zion Garden apartment complex in the 200 block of Slater King Drive.

“I think he was standing outside with another person at the time,” the coroner said. “It’s still under investigation. APD (Albany Police Department) is still investigating.”

Shade’s death is the 14th homicide in the county during 2024. All but two of those deaths were the results of gunshots, Fowler said.

There were four fatal shootings in July, including a mass shooting on the morning of July 5 at an Albany nightclub that left one man dead and three injured.

“It’s quite a few,” Fowler said of the number of slayings. “Normally we have 21 or 22 for the year. We’re at 14. This is only half of a year right now.”
